Important to athletic success is the development of leadership and team cohesion. Leadership, defined, is simply behavior that influences. From that definition, it’s easy to see that everyone on a team is, in some way, a leader. Successful coaches know how to develop a team culture of leadership that will result in higher levels of individual and team success. This course provides a systematic overview of the elements of leadership and the development of team cohesion within an athletic context. An important part of the course is a set of very practical, proven team and staff development activities designed to build leadership and team cohesion. Additionally, the topic of team cohesion is examined from the perspectives of 1) developing the desire for group/team success within individuals, 2) giving effective guidance and direction in shaping group/team motives, and 3) improving group/team performance cohesion.
